External subtitles management

Postby Noway » Thu Sep 15, 2011 8:51 pm

Hi everone,

i own a Western Digital WDTVLiveHub (upnp/dlna) and it works fine with Airplayer.
I use Airplayer on iPad to watch videos (streaming).
But external subtitles (not integrated into video frame) are not displayed (.srt file and video file are located in the same directory and named as follow: 01.avi and 01.srt)

Maybe I missed a step, but "Information" window, displayed during video play, does not show any subtitle. Only Subtitle track appears, with no choice.

Is it possible to display external subtitle ? If yes, which subtitle formats are supported and how to display ?
If not, does Oplayer offers this functionnality ?

Thanks for your help.

As DLNA/UPnP needs server to provide subtitle file as text item to us, with the same path of the video file.

With OPlayer, you need to download to your iPad, then play them locally, so have no this issue.

Only consider streaming?
1)If your NAS support DLNA/UPnP, then you can try AirPlayer, but that will depend on the server to provide the subtitle file
2)If your NAS support SAMBA/FTP, then you can try OPlayer, but currently version not supports extern subtitle, next update will support extern subtitle.[streaming]

If you consider to download files to OPlayer, then there is no issues to play externel subtitle in currently version.

Thanks a lot for your answer. Yes, I would like to stream from My Book Live (I think it supports DLNA/UPnP), AirPlayer is just great for movies without subtitles, but I have no idea if there si any option or settigns, which I could change, to enable subttitles (SRT files).

Unless you can see the subtitle file was shown in AirPlayer, otherwise the subtitle feature will not works.

That is not because we didn't support subtitle file.

The reason is that most file's URL has been encoded by the server, and do not have suffix, so we can't find out the subtitle file's path based on the video file's path.

In fact, AirPlayer can supports subtitle as OPlayer, but it depends on the server to provide the subtitle file, I think it is the server didn't provide the subtitle to us, that's why it didn't show the subtitle.

You need to buy OPlayer for iPhone and OPlayer HD for iPad.

airplayer does not support srt. fullstop. i can see the .srt files in airplayer, but they do not appear in the video when played.
btw. it's much more user friendly just to say that .srt is not supported in all the cases and that you do not exactly know in which it would work rather than giving misinformation and wasting people's time.

It supports if you can see the subtitle file in AirPlayer, what you need to do is to select subtitle encoding method in the settings page.
