I need to take a file from imovie and burn it to a disc that will play in a regular stand alone DVD player.

What file type do I need? I saw that your program changes it to MPEG. Is that the one that you need?

Give me a step by step from taking a file from the hard drive to a completed DVD capable of being played on a non computer device

Yep, it is needed by a standard dvd system.
Just select file, and burn, no other step needed.
